Activities
Everything starts at the house. The forest boundary is a few minutes away on foot, the spice farm is on the property, and Amani Nature Reserve is a day trip.
Nilo Nature Forest Reserve
Guided forest walks
Walks in the reserve are led by a licensed Tanzania Forest Services (TFS) guide, which we arrange for you. Trails lead through submontane rainforest with giant trees, tree ferns, orchids and the wild relatives of the African violet, which originates in these mountains.
Half-day and full-day walks are possible. For longer hikes we work with an experienced external hiking guide from the area.
Night walks
After dark the forest edge comes alive. Night walks focus on amphibians and reptiles, including the chameleons the Usambara Mountains are known for. Bring a headlamp; we provide the guide.
Birding
The East Usambara is one of the most important forest bird areas in Africa. A specialist birding guide from Amani can be booked for your stay. Read more about birding at Nilo.
Spice farm
The lodge sits on a working farm. Walk with the farm staff through cardamom, black pepper, vanilla, cloves and cinnamon, and see harvesting and drying when in season.
Amani Nature Reserve
A day trip to Amani, the best-known reserve of the East Usambara, with its botanical garden, research history and forest trails. Transport by Land Cruiser can be arranged.
Land Cruiser tours
Drives deeper into the forest belt and to viewpoints in the hills. A Land Cruiser with driver is available at USD 250 per day for individual travellers.
Evenings at the house
Fire pit in the garden, dinner on the terrace, and a sky without light pollution. Most guests find that doing nothing here is an activity in itself.
Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. Guides are arranged by the lodge; guide fees and reserve entry are confirmed with your booking.
